James Moseley

James Moseley is the founder and leader of the James Moseley Band, a group of top musicians in the Bay Area creating an exciting and eclectic blend of MoTown, R&B, reggae, soul, and jazz. James’ more than 30 years as a musician gives him unusual versatility as a vocalist, guitarist, composer and band leader. Reflecting the influences of great guitarists Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery and master vocalists Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, James’ music is a powerful synthesis of historic feel good vibes, modern melodies, and unique arrangements.

Energy defines James’ music and his audiences are known to create dance floors where none are available. James strives to build a distinctive and invigorating sound by bringing together outstanding musicians with highly developed, complementary musical abilities in his band. The group’s growing following reflects the success of his efforts.

James distinguishes himself with a stirring mix of vocals and lead guitar. He has studied guitar with Bay Area blues and jazz master guitarist Archie Williams, the former musical director and touring guitarist for Maria Mauldaur, and renowned jazz guitarist and composer Mimi Fox. James also studied voice training with producer/vocalist Raz Kennedy, a founding member of Bobby McFerrin’s "Voicestra".

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, James played trumpet in his junior high band. During high school, he toured throughout the state as a vocalist with the Mystics, a Temptations-style doo-wop group. He studied music composition and theory at Ohio State, picking up a guitar for the first time at age 20.

In 1980, James landed a short gig performing back up vocals and guitar for a musician in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he decided to make California his home. He put together a trio, which played in Palo Alto night clubs, and began performing in other venues.

In 1982, he was a featured solo guitarist at St. Michael’s Alley, later adding sax, bass guitar, and drums to the act. James and his oldest son also joined up to perform original compositions, melding R&B with gospel, at Stanford’s Stanfunk Festival and other locales.

The 1990’s marked a renewed focus on innovative sounds for James and he began running jam sessions with local musicians at San Rafael’s 4th Street Tavern. Two years later, he founded the James Moseley Band. In 2006, James added horns to produce the group’s irresistible sound.

Today, the James Moseley Band is emerging as one of the Bay Area’s most popular dance bands, appearing regularly at top venues including Tiburon’s Servino Ristorante and Sausalito’s Cruising Club. The Band also performs at outdoor festivals such as the Sonoma Wine & Art Festival and Larkspur Landing’s Summer Music Series as well as private parties, weddings, and corporate events.

James also appears in smaller clubs with the James Moseley Jazz Trio, which blends his guitar and vocals with percussion and piano. The breadth of his performance skills makes him a frequent guest vocalist and guitarist with other well known groups in the Bay Area and beyond.

In addition to his musical expertise, James also holds a BA in accounting from the University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business. When he is not thrilling crowds or writing original compositions, he can be found at the helm of his firm, James H. Moseley, CPA in Mill Valley.
